Eligibility for ESI Benefits: Does Suicide at Home Affect Coverage?

senthilhriil
Dear Members, please confirm whether an individual who committed suicide in their home due to personal reasons will be eligible for benefits under the ESI Scheme or any other statutory provisions.

Thanks,

Dear Senthil, Your query is not clear. Please clarify whether the suicide is a commission or an attempt. Our members can provide you with a response based on that information. I hope this matter has been reported to the nearby Police Station. The Police Inspector would likely have filed an FIR and conducted an investigation. What is the outcome of the autopsy? Is there any foul play by the beneficiaries involved in the suicide commission? If foul play is not detected, then the other members may be eligible for ESI benefits.

I second Mr. S. Bhaskar ji. First, when you say the employee committed suicide, it implies that you have to file an FIR with the police. After confirming the details, you can approach the concerned ESI Local office with the Death Certificate and ESI Card of the employee. You need to fill out the Funeral Expenses Claim form to receive the nominal amount of 10,000 rupees for the deceased employee.

Nothing is payable in this case except funeral expenses, and that too if the deceased employee was eligible for any one benefit under the ESI Act.
