Confused About HR Roles? What's the Real Difference Between HR Generic and HR Generalist?

Ashish Jha
Dear All,

This is Ashish working as an HR Executive. Recently, I attended an interview where I was asked, "What is the difference between HR Generic and HR Generalist?" Unfortunately, I was unable to answer this. Would any of you please explain it?

Awaiting your reply.

According to me, both are the same. The word "Generic" itself means general/common. HR Generic/Generalist means the position involves all general activities of recruitment, selection, induction, grievance handling/counseling, training/development. Whereas the opposite is an HR Specialist where the person performs only certain duties, for example, HR - Training and Development, HR - Recruitment Specialist.
