Since it's a summer project, don't try for ready-made solutions. Each industry and organization has its own unique challenges and opportunities. Make suggestions on award categories based on:

- What kind of behavior/efforts/results does the organization want to encourage among the various categories of employees
- How much technology support can you depend on to automate the entire process
- What is the recognition culture in the org currently
- How often do you want to give out awards
- What kind of budget is the org willing to pledge

Spend time detailing out each award category in terms of workflow and check the feasibility.
