Hi people,

I am working with a conglomerate. We have diversified businesses from fertilizers to sugar. I have to plan a knowledge management system that integrates all the flagship companies by sharing knowledge, best practices, etc.

I have gone through the internet, which gives "what" is KM but not "how" to implement it. I am confused about how to proceed. Please help me.

Aim should be to build on a knowledge database which is shared with everyone for this to happen. First, make groups in each sector and assign a person in each sector to collate the information. Use the web portal and publish the articles. Each sector can have sections, e.g., cite HR site. Once the first step is finished, take feedback. Conduct meetings, make policies, and so on.

Hi, I am Raghu,

Before embarking on this project, you need to be clear about what your objective is.

Basically, this involves process, product, and quality improvements in an organization.

Each industry has its own core competency.

Let us take the Fertilizers Industry as an example.

In this industry, what do you want to achieve in knowledge management?

List as a matrix the critical positions which can affect quality, productivity, and sales.

Let's consider quality.

An experienced person in the Mixing Department understands the process. In your compounding or mixing department, you will have a standard operating procedure (SOP) detailing the chemicals to be mixed, their quantities, and the duration of mixing. During the mixing process, the employee ensures correctness based on experience. If incorrect, adjustments are made, such as adding chemicals or adjusting temperature due to their experience. This aspect needs to be documented. Even the supervisor may not be aware of these nuances.

Similar to quality, in each area, we must identify such instances using the matrix and document this knowledge.

Start with:

Knowledge Analysis

Knowledge Planning

Knowledge Technology

Wishing you all the best.

Regards,
Raghu
