Your question should have more information. You have not mentioned the occasion, affordability of the company, budget, and further implications. Are you concerned that if you give gifts in your department, other sections/departments/units will also demand/request the same?

If you are okay with everything, you can consider the following options:
- Normally household items
- Mementos
- Items that can be used regularly
- Sometimes T-shirts/jerkins with company logos

What kind of firm are you at? How many employees and what is the likely budget? What is the cross-section we are looking at? As in the different strata of people in your organization?

We have retained a Gifting expert (Yes! there is a person like that who specializes in sourcing the right gift at the right cost!!) who helps us with our various needs throughout the year. Since we are a Real Estate firm, the people to whom we send gifts range from peons working in Banks & Municipal council offices to Chairmen of leading Financial/Architectural/Law/Liaison firms in the city. She manages to select the right gift(s) based on the feedback we provide regarding people's backgrounds. Moreover, all the gifts can be different too!!

So many things pile up in homes that one does not need. The best option is to give gift vouchers and let the employee decide what they want. If the company's policy does not allow for gift vouchers, and since it is a get-together, bring some fun by conducting games and giving out prizes in a way that everyone leaves with something.
