But Performance Management system is not a one day's job. It is a process. Performance planning, Performance Execution, Performance Assessment and Performance Review are the main steps involved in PMS. So there are various process involved in it like Job review and evaluation, Competency mapping and assessment, appraisals, etc.
Please do not look Performance appraisal in isolation. Performance appraisal is simple one of the activities in the gambit of performance management, which Anu has aptly briefed.
First you have to understand the basic premise of PMS in your organization. Whether your organization focuses on MBO or BSC based PMS?
How the performance planning process is completed?
How the targets are set and communicated?
So please do not look for 'tips' on PMS. Try to understand the complete picture of PMS.

Thanks for your contribution. I truly agree with you that it is a process which need to be evaluated for one's need in the particular organisation. It needs to be taylor made to suit our need. However, the basic four components mentioned by Anu are essential. You cannot leave out one out of these four.
