You're probably asking yourself, what the heck is a "scheduling alert"?

If your organization employs a diverse multicultural workforce, or you provide services to organizations around the world, you need to pay attention to this new term, "scheduling alert"!

Although there are only 9 or 10 statutory holidays in North America, there are 37 "scheduling alert" days for 2005.

A "scheduling alert" is simply a day which some religious, cultural or national group celebrates! If you have a diverse workforce, one or more of your employees might be asking for a day off on a "scheduling alert" day! Or even worse, they might just take the day off and call in sick. Or even worse yet, they might just not turn up and NOT call in, leaving you with a staffing vulnerability.

So, the proactive HR professional in a diverse organization needs to know about "scheduling alert" days and to help their organization proactively plan for them.

For several years our company, TCM.com, Inc., has been selling a multicultural calendar <link updated to site home> ( Search On Cite | Search On Google ) to help HR professionals become more proactive and take the lead in their organizations in contingency planning around schedule alerts!

As more and more organizations develop private intranets for their workforces and extranets for their customers/suppliers, we have introduced an electronic calendar <link updated to site home> ( Search On Cite | Search On Google ) for intranet/extranet use. Customized electronic calendars can be developed, branded with an organization/association's logo and corporate diversity message. And the electronic calendar can be used to educate management and supervisory staff about "schedule alerts" and to broaden their knowledge about the religious/cultural groups in the organization.

For years, we have also been offering a FREE weekly multicultural holidays bulletin. Every Friday morning, we publish a bulletin of upcoming holidays and schedule alerts. To join and for more information, go to:

Dear Colleagues,
I highly appreciate what Eric has put forward in respect of Scheduling Alert.
Apart from the popular national, religious and ethnical holidays HR practitioners in multicultural and diversified workforce should be aware of 'lesser' holidays that might lead to absentieesm on the part of some workers-eg a Reggae fan staying home on May 11 unknown to the HR that Bob Marley died on this day.
Hence apart from the regular biodata collected by HR on employees I believe they should go ahead and add dates of importance as it affects employees eg wedding anniversary, date spouse died, etal all these is to avoid a rude shock when employee does not show up and the HR can not put in a word for his/her whereabout.
I think diversity management on its own could be a very interesting career and a way of life if the HR professional puts in his/her best to make it so.
Thanks.
