This is a right question to be asked, considering the amount of mistakes seen in resumes or Job Advts(of HRs) and Leave letters...
As per my understanding goes (about the dictionary meaning)
Personal= of one's own, private
Eg:- I am taking leave for personal reason.
Personnel = Of the workforce
Eg:- Please meet the personnel manager in this regard.
The word 'personal' is an adjective always qualifying a noun that indicates something related to an individual human being. Eg: personal file, personal traits,personal action,personal injury,personal assistant, personal space etc,.
On the other hand, the word 'personnel' is a collective noun referring to the group of people working in an organisation or in the armed forces. Eg:personnel department, marketing personnel etc. If the difference in their pronunciation is carefully remembered, one will not use the words interchangeably by mistake.
