More often than not, we are overwhelmed by new management fads at regular intervals of time. This has happened so often that we have developed an immunity towards them. I wonder why we do not automatically develop a similar immunity to new diseases such as AIDS.
Is "Competency Mapping" a passing fad or is it a new paradigm in HR Systems? Let us examine some questions, which have been plaguing HR professors for decades:

1. How do we clearly link training to performance?
2. How do we align jobs & people to organizational and customer
requirements?
3. How do we customize Appraisals to each job position?
4. How do we select people who perform?
5. How do we reduce apple-polishing and bias in appraisals?

This happens only in India...
When they do want to implement something, they say..."Hey, that is so rubbish" but outside India, it get implemented.
Succession Planning
360-degree appraisal systems....are some of those so called HR fads in India.
Succession planning is very successful in US and Europe...how many companies do that in India?
Measuring the effectiveness of training...Performance Management Systems...competency mapping...all these are done in countries other then India.

Sanjeev,
You are absolutely right on that, but the kind of tranformation happening in India, it is not far that HR will take a more Strategic Role in the businesses of tomorrow. There are new dimensions been added to the HR persona and these practices will be introduced in India.
I know about you and heard a lot about your expertise in the field of HR.
I am fortunate that I have platform like cite hr to interact with such eminent personality from my domain.

Hi Mr Sanjeev

Well I am hardly 10 days old in this forum and had been seeing a number of posting more for understanding what is happening around in HR

Sometimes i come across with interesting topics for discussion and sometimes I dont

THis posting about fads and more so about India is inviting my attention as I am a general believer that none of these concepts are fads

If it is fad, it is fad throughout the globe

Your observation that none of these things are happening in India is not the correct statement.

Let us take Succession Planning

Tats have reasonably working out succession planning

Murugappa Group in South is known for their succession planning

If you want to look at positive sides, you will get in india

360 Degree Appraisal

I know many organisations informally follow this practice In fact way back in 1982, a Company Called S $ S Power Switch Gear Ltd followed this principle for all their HODs I was part of that Company at that time

Competency mapping is a newer concept and may take some more time to stabilise

My only concern is none of these management concepts are emanating from India

I believe India has matured enough and newer concepts and methods would come from india soon

It is actually a new paradigm in Human Resource being so vaguely introduced but in all ways, it is helping a lot of job competency and job discontentment problem from among HR professionals.
