Universal Account Number and Employer Access
The Universal Account Number (UAN) was designed to provide a unique identifier and not to facilitate employers in accessing employment history. The employee's passbook is similar to a bank passbook, and access to it is restricted only to the member. However, in recent years, agencies conducting background verification have been observed obtaining information about services, overlapping services, etc., from the PF sites using the UAN. This indicates that employers have access to employee service history. In my opinion, this practice should not be allowed. Employers have no right to access details from official websites, as these websites are not expected to expose such information to outsiders.
