How to draft a recruitment and selection policy?

Recruitment refers to the process where potential applicants are searched for, and then encouraged to apply for an actual or anticipated vacancy. Selection is the process of hiring employees among the shortlisted candidates and providing them a job in the organization.


The TA Policy normally will cover the broader aspects of Recruitment where in the Recruitment is the process in which people are offered selection in an organization. It is when prospective employees are searched for and are then encouraged to apply for jobs within the organization.

Remember that this is one of the steps in the whole process of TA, however it is a long process that involves a series of tasks, starting with an analysis of the job requirements and ending with the appointment of the employee. Broadly the Policy should cover the process of recruitment include:

- Job Description for each Role
- Job Specification for each Role
-Analyzing job requirements
-Advertising the vacancy
-Attracting candidates to apply for the job
-Managing response
-Scrutinizing applications
-Shortlisting candidates

The Policy to cover the Selection Process also where in Selection is the process of identifying an individual from a pool of job applicants with the requisite qualifications and competencies to fill jobs in the organization. This is an HR process that helps differentiate between qualified and unqualified applicants by applying various techniques. The term ‘selection’ is placing the right person in the right job. Selection is the process in which various strategies are employed to help recruiters decide which applicant is best suited for the job. The Policy has to include :

-Screening Process and the various tools to be administered and Cut Off Scores
-Eliminating unsuitable candidates and how it will be done
-Conducting an examination (aptitude/intelligence/performance/ personality test, etc.)
Interviews and Checking references
Medical tests and Reference Checks from past companies

You need to from a core team who has to sit with Top Management and Promoters to understand their expectations on TA policy. Then sit with the Business Leaders and HR Team and then draft Policy by having few good TA Experts in the Team. Then Put the Policy on Probation for 6 months and fine tune the Policy document. Ensure that it is audited periodically on how the policy is followed in reality and understand the gaps and keep reviewing the Policy then and there so that the it will be dynamic and effective.
