Dear All, I would like to know if there are any tests to find a person's design sense. We all know the perception of design is subjective, but when it comes to commercial designing, the person has to forgo his/her personal beliefs. I would also like to know, how to test the attitude of a person - willing to let go of their ego, personal beliefs, and judgments.

Dear Kruthika,
Thanks for coming up with a little different type of query. Your question is on testing a person's "design sense". However, what type of design you are looking at, for what purpose and for what level?
The definition of "design" is "A plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other objects before it is made".
The second paragraph of your question is on knowing a person's attitude. To test a person's attitude, case studies can be given and based on the replies, judgements can be made. However, if you use this method as a part of the recruitment process then it is fraught with the risk as the job candidate will be guarded and he/she may not give a reply truthfully.
Whether you are checking a person's "design sense" or an "attitude" and if it is for recruitment, then behavioural interviewing techniques could be useful to you. Nevertheless, implementation of this technique requires training and maturity also.
Feel free to contact me for your further queries.

Dear Mr. Dinesh,
The type of design I am looking is the current trend - minimalism.
The purpose of the design will be according to the client's needs. We have automotive, agri-tech, pharma etc. The person must be able to adapt to the client's brief and their type of target audience and come up with designs.
I agree with what you are saying about the case study method, even i am facing the same problem.
Behavioral interviewing techniques might be useful in knowing the attitude but not the design sense, I believe.
So, do you know any test to assess a person's design sense?
Regards,
Kruthika

Dear Kruthika,

If the designs are to be derived from minimalism then your company needs to design elaborate and customised recruitment tests. Like recruitment for software engineers, there could be many rounds. But before that, based on the past clients' requirement, you need to create case studies for recruitment.

You can give the candidates case studies based on the requirements of the past customers and find out whether the candidate has a design sense.

Yes, behavioural interviewing will also be useful to test the design sense of the candidate but one needs to ask the questions that are customised.

Lastly, you may tell the candidates to come up with their past works. In fact, no need to call the candidate for the interview as well. The past works can be told to send by email. You may call the candidates, provided you are satisfied with the candidate's past work.

By the way, do you hire candidates with BFA/MFA qualification in your company? I ask this question because not all fine art/visual art colleges teach form in their graduation. At a few colleges, the form is taught at the post-graduate level. This could create a disadvantage to a few candidates.

For further queries if any, please contact me.

Thanks,
