Greetings to all.

I am a serving officer of Indian Army with an MBA degree from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (Weekend MBA Program). I will be completing 20 years of service in the Army in Dec 2020. I plan to take a Pre Mature Retirement from the Army. I have the following questions :-

1. Is it a good time for transition ?

2. If yes, how should i go ahead in my Job Search and which role i should look for ....HR, Supply Chain...etc.

3. Is it advisable in present times to appear for GMAT and do another 1 year Executive Program from IIM A or ISB ?

Request guidance, especially from veterans who are already working in corporate world. I am 42 years of age.

I am open to upgrade my qualification, if need be. I am also ready to start working right after leaving, just that not able to figure out how to proceed for the same.

Thanks in anticipation of guidance.

Dear Mr Amit Kaushik,

The replies to your questions are as below:

1. Is it a good time for transition?

Reply: - There is no good or bad time for transition. Goodness or badness of the time depends on our efforts and also the direction of the efforts.

2. If yes, how should i go ahead in my Job Search and which role i should look for ....HR, Supply Chain...etc.

Reply: - Defence personnel are versatile and adaptive. They are doers in general. Therefore, you can take up any assignment that lands in your hands.

3. Is it advisable in present times to appear for GMAT and do another 1 year Executive Program from IIM A or ISB ?

Reply: - This is your personal call. Whether you do this course or not, you are going to start on a clean slate. Your previous experience is of not much consequence. This is the drawback of the defence personnel as they do not have functional experience i.e. the specific exposure to HR, Marketing, Operations, Finance etc.

Additional Comments: - The strength/weakness of the average defence officer is as below:

Average Strengths: - These are as below:

a) As stated above, they are versatile hence capable of working in any department.

b) They have organised way of working

c) They have a structured way of thinking

d) Overall they are good at drafting hence capable to draft new policies, procedures, SOPs etc in a short time

e) Their methods of maintaining the records are good.

Average Weaknesses: - These are as below:

f) With bureaucracy in the blood, they heavily rely on paper-based work. Does not know performance measures associated with the job. High dependence on the subordinates even to do small jobs.

g) In the defence organisations, they enjoy enormous coercive power. The same power will not be at their disposal in civil jobs. This makes them upset.

h) Some of them live in the past or even bask in the past glory. This erodes their futuristic thinking.

i) Not all of them show a learning attitude. Exceptions are like Mr Nathrao who is ex-Group Captain of Indian Air Force. After 60, he has appeared for many exams and cleared them with good grades. Difficult to find such persons with an indomitable spirit.

j) They are highly operations-oriented but sometimes this is counter-productive as this dilutes their business acumen. A little do they understand that dogmatism is anathema to business growth or expansion.

Final Comments: - I too have served in Air Force for 20 years but in the ranks. After leaving the Air Force, I worked in civil organisations and then started my own business. In the course of my business of Management Training, I have dealt with people of all hues which included ex-defence officers as well. I have seen a few defence officers doing exceptionally well. They have turned around a few companies too. However, there is a bias against defence personnel and are recommended to work only in the Admin department or Security. I too was a victim of this bias but was determined to defy it. Therefore, like others, fighting this bias could be a challenge for you also. By chance, you might get a bad interview experience. Notwithstanding your stature, you could be belittled also. However, treat this as an exception and move on.

All the best!

Corporate is all open to veterans.I would only say that your exceptional skills and abilities to align with corporate needs is key to your success in private sector.
Suggest you to join vetrans groups and other social platforms and start networking with people.,especially the veterans group.

Dear Mr.Amit,
Our senior mentor Mr.Dinesh Divekar Sir said everything clearly about your questions. Please mention your branch or specialization of MBA course, somebody to take decision. Most of the companies are expecting the related experience/exposure to perform the job responsibility. But don't worry there are some companies can offer the job. One of the Military Officer served in Army Signal department, after his retirement he joined in Marketing department in private company and now he is working as a "Marketing Manager" for your kind information.
