Dear Amoghwangi,

Since there is no mention about the ratio between the permanent workers and the daily wagers in your post and the staggering total number of daily wagers working in the three shifts a day would certainly raise a reasonable doubt in every one whether you run the entire industry 24X7 with daily paid labor. Permanency of job is the most effective factor in creating sense of belongingness in the minds of working masses to be loyal to the employer. Seasonal nature of production coupled with unskilled and repetitive operations may demand daily wagers in large numbers for the sake of flexibility in the hire and fire. In such a case, certainly you would have well-planned production schedule in every season depending on the anticipated availability and procurement of raw materials and their effective processing so as to meet the off-season market demand. Therefore, in my opinion, how much preference you give to such daily wagers in regular employment of the company, how far your wage rates are over and above the daily market rates of the locality, availability of benefits like subsidised canteen facilities, the average no of days per month you are providing them work, whether such daily wagers are directly employed by your company or engaged through contractors, the availability of alternative employments in the hinterland etc., are the major factors to be considered in devising an attractive daily wager policy.

More particularly, how you dealt with them during the COVID-19 lock down is a major factor in the creation of the sense of loyalty and gratitude in them towards the Company.
