My company has decided to hire an employee with impeccable credentials. We started interviewing this candidate, who is also a HNI, and after several interviews decided that he is the right choice for the role we are providing him in the Company. However, we also found out that he had not mentioned to us that he had already resigned from his current company. On the other hand we had also not offered him any Letter of Intent of hiring him for the said position.
When we did inform him that he would be selected, that is when he informed us that he had already resigned from his current organization two months back, but that his resignation was yet to be formally accepted.
What verification would you suggest we do on this person? And how much can this person be trusted in future?
From the interviews though he has cleared all technical and relative aspects with flying colours from the TOP Management.

Did you specifically ask him about his work status? Any way ask for proper relief dicuments from last employer. Do your usual back ground checks n then hire him.

No we had not asked him about his work status either specifically or in passing. He has also informed that he will give all necessary documents required for the transition.
