Law does not prescribe for deduction for intervening period. Ideally except Sick Leave there should not be any deduction for intervening period. Some companies deduct for intervening day in case of PL/EL (earned leave) also.
So it depends on type of leave applied and company leave policy/rule.

It totally depends on your company's leave policy. Those three leaves should be considered in terms of sick leave or casual leave or sandwich leave. If this would be a sandwich leave, it is considered as three days leave. If this would be sick leave, it should be considered as sick leave for the applied 2 days.
