= Dear friend,
It's mandatory to register the birth (deaths as well) as per the Registration of Births & Deaths Act, 1969 to register every birth/stillbirth and death with the concerned state/UT Government within 21 days of its occurrence. Normally VAO-panchayat offices of the villages, ward offices of town and cities registers the births & deaths. Once registered a 'certificate of registration' in the prescribed form will be issued by these offices. Extra copies of the certificates are also available on payment of a fee (say Rs.20, 30). If not registered it's not possible to find out from these offices. By chance the birth taking place in a primary health centres run by the local govt. the officer in charge also sends a report to the Registrar of the jurisdiction. If the birth taking place in respective houses, or elsewhere, it's the duty of any of the household to register. If they fail there is no evidence. Some times, if they mind a VAO can issue a letter stating the event which he verifies thru' his sources and act, might help.
