Hi.. I need some clarification, views and suggestions with regard to Medical Representatives in Big cities like Chennai, Bangalore, etc.,. In early days M.R. profession had some good respect because they appointed based on the qualification and performance. In those days the qualification has been fixes as a Science Graduate or a degree or diploma in Pharmacy Science. But, now a days when see some Medical Representative even from Big companies like German Remedies, Pfizer, Dr. Reddys Lab, Sabinsa, Sami Lab etc. , many people are under qualified or unfit to the job at all. When we see their pronunciation of the medicine names, we can clearly make out that he is not having proper qualifications.
Recently I had seen many people who worked as M.R. are Commerce Graduate, SSLC (Passed / Failed), PUC and +2 completed persons. They are unable to pronounce even the medicine names and the compound of medicines. I think these Big companies are recruiting these persons because of the Low Salary, which these people will work for 10k to 15k. These companies should mind about their standards and reputation in the Pharmacy Market and they are spoiling their own names in the market. Medical Representative Profession has its own value, whether these Big companies secure the M.R. profession and their values.

Dear friend,
Your grouse is about dilution of the recruitment standards while recruiting the Medical Representatives (MRs). You say that this is done even by the big shots of the pharma industry. Nevertheless, the issue is about freedom of fixing the recruit standards. Big or small company, legally nothing wrong as long as they pay the minimum wages.
Dilution of standards is mainly because of the non-availability of the rightly skilled manpower. They could have trained or groomed the raw manpower. But then after the training, newly joined employees just leave, leaving the pharma companies high and dry.
One more reason why pharma companies do not get right manpower is because of the change in preferences of the young generation to the sedentary jobs over field jobs. In pharma companies, to do their job, MRs have to put up with heat, rain and cold in the field. Constantly they have to be on their toes. In contrast jobs, are wide available where one can sit in office and that too in air-conditioned environment. Notwithstanding the change in job preferences by the young generation, pharma companies have to run their business.
