I am working in company. my boss ordered to bring a 5KG gas cylinder from another division of our company. When I was bringing. It the cylinder fell from bike and lost somewhere. I searched for it but I did not get it. When it told it to my employer he asked me to pay for the cylinder and demanded new cylinder. I have to pay for this now.
Please tell whether am I like to pay? Can he legally demand me for compensation? Can I deny to pay? What if I deny to pay? Will it affect my employment??

The consequence is that by your negligence you have caused a material loss to your employer. Therefore, your employer might be right in asking you to make good the loss. You can replace the lost cylinder with a new one or pay its actual cost. If you fail, your employer may recover it from your salary. Normally, an act of negligence by an employee can be reprimanded by the employer but can not be punished unless it has got serious repercussions like loss of money or life. Well; it might be right on your part to think that it is not part and parcel of your normal duty to act as a carrier boy or to do errand. If so you could have politely refused in the beginning itself. Your hesitation or refusal to compensate the loss after the incident can easily lead to an inference that you missed the cylinder wantonly on the way as a mark of your protest. Trivial things like this are very delicate in employment relations and as such need more maturity of mind and magnanimity of action both on the part of the employer and the employee concerned.
The simple logic is to pay the cost of materials which has been lost by your carelessness. The demand of cost by your employer is justified. Your employers direction to make payment is a good option to follow. The management may held you responsible and initiatein discipliniary action for non-compliance in the matter or denial for cost of lost materials.
Dear colleague,
It is your negligent act which has caused the loss to the employer. Engaging mind to think ,should I pay or can employer demand to repay cost is meanness. Accept mistake with grace and replace or pay the cost of cylinder. Thank God that the opportunity to serve your employer continues to be available.
