My suggestion is not to use free standalone software for payroll and employee related info.
Once you add more employees, then it would be difficult to migrate the data.
Most of the free software stuff need not take care statutory compliance.
So my recommendation is to subscribe a cloud based HR Payroll solution. Try greytHR for example. It is a cool solution for a startup as well as enterprise. Cost wise, I do not think anybody else offer a better package.
As you are looking at a tool to engage employees and also enhance the corporate culture, use a solution with good reputation, co-created with industry leaders, built with solid technology stalk, good testimonials, and financially sound (why because they should not shut down, all on a sudden).
