Imagine the company you're working for is hiring 3rd or 4th year students. However, there is one application from 2nd year student where he/she writes that he/she has learnt him/herself lots of different staff for the job. He/she also attaches a list of books read learning that stuff. Implying that the books in the list seems to contain lots of different useful info for the job, how would you react to this. I mean, would you consider it as his/her serious advantage over other candidates or just a minor one?

I would consider it a serious advantage - such self learners can be great assets to the company. If I were you, I would immediately call this person for an interview and assess the claims. If found worthy, it would be worth it to push this candidate harder to achieve greater heights.

Such people should be called and interviewed.
If real potential is seen - bend your rules/change your rules and hire them.
Mentoring and guiding them may produce brilliant employees.
Cannot be rule bound always and miss out on the chance of getting a brilliant employee.
