The linking of big data, analytical tools and wireless networks with physical industrial equipment is called IIoT. IIoT is derived from the term IOT-Internet Of Things. Bridging the gap between OT - Operational Technology and IT - Informational Technology can be the best way to describe what IIoT does. Over the years the industry has gone through 3 major versions of operations.
Version 1.0: production units were based on the mechanical production principles with the help of water and steam power.
Version 2.0: 30 years later the industry shifted to electric powered assembly lines for mass production. Economies of scale through mass production was the key in this era.
Version 3.0: the third industrial revolution started when the first PLC - Programmable Logic Controller was built. This is when the industry was enabled for production automation through the use of electronics and IT systems.
What is Version 4.0 ?
We are in version 4.0 today. The use of automation and data exchange in manufacturing has taken the industry to a whole new level. With the help of cyber physical systems, the IOT and cloud computing production units are now turning into Smart Factories.
