Right to disconnect!

Workplace stress has become a necessary by product of today's work environment, life style and ever increasing ambitions of employees to achieve materialistic gains. It seems unavoidable. It is forgotten that life still waits for you beyond mere workplace obligations and blind race to be on top.

Many international and national studies have confirmed that workplace stress and employee burnout is going to be the one of the biggest challenges to handle by HR people in 2017. We cannot eliminate or escape stress at the workplace. It has become a fact of modern worklife. But we can try to neutralize the stress to some extent by fuelling our lives with meaningful actions.

Source of stress is internal as well as external. On surface, it appears that stress happens due to meeting deadlines, over commitment, not having enough time, dealing with nagging boss, bullying and disruptive colleagues. These are often problems over which one has very limited control. But in reality stress is one's response to all these external factors. Stress begins in our mind via a thought or belief. When one starve with his purpose by not engaging with work, stress response is triggered. When one allows work to chase him and makes life full of nothing but work and obligations, feeling of bitterness, depression and even anger begins to affect the mind and body.

BM has also conducted an opinion poll to do a reality check on this phenomenon and results are really alarming. Majority of HR managers contacted across the country are of the opinion that workplace stress and employee burnout exists in organizations and they are finding it difficult to meet this challenge and the reasons attributed to this chronic disease are multilayered and directly affect the employee's as well as organisation's health. The emergence of technology has also contributed to this problem. Personal and professional life has become inseparable.

The boundaries between the two are gone, which is leading to burnout. Smart phones are taking a toll on personal time. Employees cannot afford to unplug from work. Work chases wherever employee is and expectations of management are ever growing. There is apparent disconnect between employer's and employees' perception about stress and burnout. The time has come to think, as to why employee should not have a right to disconnect after working hours? Employers need to address this issue.

This issue cover story has been centered on this burning topic about which people prefer to keep quite and silently face the heat. The experts have come out with possible suggestions to take on the problem. HR has to address it on priority before it becomes the biggest threat for the organisations.
