Before getting into "Design and Development", I feel that it is important to do some courses of quality or Six Sigma etc. Is your testing department covers Quality also? As of now you could be checking "Quality of Conformance" however, a stint in quality department will improve your knowledge on "Quality of Design". This is also important.
