I am looking after the Talent Assessment segment for one of the largest construction firms wherein we do assessment centre's, create and facilitate IDP's and also design training interventions to fill the competency gap. I have been asked to come up with an innovative project within this domain and hence looking for some fresh ideas. Please give your suggestions.

The fresh idea could be to measure out the business impact of what you are doing. Therefore, following questions emerge:

a) What is the ROI on assessment centres?

b) Have IDPs helped in the employee retention?

c) You have designed the training programmes to to fill the competency gap. What is the ROI on training? If measured, on what parameters did you measure it? Has any cost been reduced? Has some process turnaround time been reduced?

In the construction companies, planning is central to everything. Has the planning accuracy been improved? If yes, by what per cent?

The bane of your industry is that Purchase department does not get indent in time. In fact, most of indents are "urgent". This forces your purchase to do on spot purchasing. To avoid the problems of "urgency" and "emergency", they end up in accumulating the inventory. Has the inventory been reduced?

Construction companies outsource their work to the contractors. Disputes are part and parcel of the contracts. Has the ratio of "Disputes per contract" reduced?

In other industries, a major shift has taken place from adversarial relationship to collaborative relationship with the contractors. What efforts are being made to foster collaboration with the contractors?

There are so many business issues in the construction industry. HR Department, through their HR interventions should facilitate to solve those issues. That is the biggest innovation from HR!
