So, I worked at an Indian IT company for 5.5 years during which time I was promoted thrice. I put in my papers when my mother's health deteriorated. I was serving my notice period well and had handed over all of my work to a new teammate who was to be my replacement. But my project manager turned into a sadist about a couple of weeks into my notice period and started loading me with tasks related to another programming language (which I did not know and did not have time to train for). After about another 2 weeks, things got really out of hand when he loaded me with even more critical work, setting me up for failure, which made no sense to me. Anyways, I told the HR and she talked to the manager, and then instead of things getting better, they got worse. He started saying he would delay my stay beyond the 2 months and knowing his history I was fully aware that he could do that.

So, I just sent an email on a Friday morning, with him and the hr in loop, that I was no longer going to come to work because of the treatment that I had received at the hands of the manager. Anyways, long story short:
1. I have the salary slips.
2. The company gave me gratuity (I have company generated doc and email for that).
3. The company gave me PF (I have doc, email for that too)
BUT
4. The company did not give me a relieving letter.

Its been about 6 months. My mother is recovered now and I want to go back to work. I have solid references from this old company (other than my last manager). However, when they call up the company office, I am sure I will turn up as absconding or something like that.

How can I mitigate this? I mean skill set wise I am pretty much among the handful of data scientists. I mean I have always been professional except that last bit. And I really need to get back on track. I am seriously considering moving to someplace like abu dhabi where they don't do bg checks. Please help.

Greetings,
Please write to your HR team or the Head of HR requesting a release on the humanitarian ground and offer to buy out the remaining duration of notice period that you didn't serve.
Attach documents that states your Mother's health as critical when you left and if possible share the hand over that you did.
No matter what, please do not complain. Just remain patient . If you need us to help you out with the letter, share a draft that you would send them, we can guide you on that.
Send that letter as a registered post .
Wish you all the best!

Apart from what learned member above has suggested, try for a chance in Gulf and finish a good tenure there.
That will help in terms of good references, documents.
Get in touch with your HR of this company where manager is being harsh and have a personal interaction with them
Point out that in your complete service, there was good output and no problems at all.
I am sure that other team members have a poor opinion of this sadist manager as you term it.
HR will be knowing of reputation and proper patient talk will help you secure relief documents.
