It is not necessary that the company should give acceptance letter in a certain period. Depending upon the company policy in this regard the the days may change. In some cases the acceptance will be immediate and in some other cases it will get delayed due to top management refusing to accord permission to the reporting officer to go ahead with the resignation or due to some other reasons. However, since undue delay in accepting or rejecting the resignation from management side will cause damage to employee, a proper HR person should always be vigilant and should insist the respective manager to communicate the decision at the earliest. Therefore, you may ask the HR to get your date of relieving confirmed.

Yes , i agree with the above reply from cite members. it totally depends upon the situation of the company as if any employee has more responsibility then some time company may extend the acceptance letter till new person take over the charge.

I fully endorse the comments of learnt Member Shri T.K. Madhu. As rightly pointed out by him, Co. may accept & relieve the person same day also & settle the issue; whereas; it can/will extend the time depending upon how important the post/work is. Most Cos. appoint a person after spending lot of time, money & energy unlike taking a loading/unskilled worker.
If the post/work is important; then the Co. need to find a substitute. But the period cannot be indefinite so as to spoil the career growth of another person. Every HR Head should plan in the best interest of the Co. as also the employee; since the Seniors will also be hunting to change for better prospects. The HR Head should make a uniform policy to avoid harassment, heart-burning & other grievances.

I am also not aware on the legal aspect, however will suggest to keep sending reminders for getting the acceptance with CC to Supervisor/Manager/HRBP/HR Manager/Admin.
