Dear Mr Peer Mohammed,

Well my compliments to you first, it is a good excercise for those who see in it ways to evaluate which is part of any management and more specifically those who are in the HR function. XLRI and to a very large extent TESS as well are the institutes well known for studies in human resources management. It is a subject or rather stream of management which shall play a very big role in the coming years, more specifically when the demand for resources outstrips availability.

However, one must not view HR as divorced from the main stream management. To rise beyond HR in your later years in your careeryou would need to be able to dove tail human resources with other functions such as marketing and finance, strategic thinking, change management, HR in service industry, in India we have the services today the main export earner and it will continue for some more years, our economy for the next 10 to 15 years will be dominated by services sector, you have to therefore have a very wide insight into this sector, the biggest aspect today as far as Indian industry is concerned is Joint Ventures, mergers and acquisitions, all of these issues are very relevant in todays scenerio. IIM teaches you all that. XLRI is geared for the manufacturing industry per se, IR is relevant in a manufacturing organization where you have to deal with unions etc.

To my mind for those who think futuristic it has to be IIM. These are my personal views, I could be wrong in my assesment, I am thinking of future.

Thank you very much Mr Peer Mohammed for setting this agenda for a good discussion, I am sure most of the readers would find this discussion and views expressed therein very useful.

Warm regards.........Loveindra

Dear Sardhar Saheb,
I feel IIM-A, would be a better option. In 6 months you can upgrade you and learn and implement whereas in XLRI it is of 18 months, money wise also it is cost effective.XLRI is more focused on traditional industry whereas IIM-A,is more service centric. This is my personel view.

Rajesh

Dear Mr.Peer,
As far as HR is concerned It is always better to go with XLRI (as they are specialised in that). That has been established since long back before these business schools have been established. XLRI has been dedicated in this (HR) field.
Hence its cource is far more valued as far as HR field is conerned

Dear Mr Sardar,

My view on both the cases are as follows, would request you to pls add your view and also correct me if i am wrong ;

01. XLRI :

Is a 14 months session and is via satellite, content and discussions and quality of learning may not be the same as in a class room.

It is a certificate course, which means it is not equivalent a Diploma or a Degree.

Cost about 1.8 lakhs, is costly by my opinion.

02. IIM - A,

Is again a MDP which is only a certificate.

Again all business schools provide for such trainings from time to time.

It is again not equivalent to a diploma or a degree in HR !

I am given to understand that these are conducted by faculty as they have some source of revenue for the institutes and that is why these type of courses keep coming up.

But my question is if a person does these courses and aspires to be the top position in the industry by the virtue of these certificates what is the acceptability and second what are the chances if they are facing competition from a graduate from even Symbiosis or ICFAI or for that matter any of the 2nd and 3rd rung B-Schools!

If it is only for knowledge they it is pretty costly ... if it is to give you a " Degree " your answer to my submission will be the relevant answer ...

Thanks and Rgds,

SKP

Dear Peer
According to me, XLRI is better. One reason is the extensive course content. My brother is currently pursuing his PGCBM from XLRI.The way the course is conducted is very good and effective provided the candidate is able to keep pace with the lectures.
You haven't mentioned your objective of taking the course. If your aim is to get an insight of strategic HR and then, you should opt for IIM-A. Otherwise knowledge and content- wise, XLRI is best.
Regards and all the best
Priya Shan
