Results or people? where to focus if you’re aiming for excellence
This was the question posed to me by a senior leader in a large multinational organisation. i wondered how long it had been since i had lost him. that wasnt what i had been saying. it was however the inspiration for a talk i recently gave at a gala dinner event. and this article in which we will discover sustained success isnt about committing to results or to people; its about committing to excellence. imagine a continuum. on the one side you have a singleminded focus on results. on the other side a singleminded focus on people. in the middle; a balance between the two. if you were running a business where should you aim to be? three people in the dinner audience i was addressing cast their vote on the side of results. many more shouted people. an even larger group werent willing to commit to a side. its a balance they said. ok then lets start with results. what happens when organisations focus singlemindedly on results? so are you saying that in order to succeed we need to move from being resultsdriven to being peopledriven?
Talk the talk: business acumen in trainers
Hi everyone this is a pretty light post but i would love to hear some of your thoughts on this issue. as someone involved with the field of training and performance improvement i have found that it is becoming increasingly necessary to market ourselves to the world. if we go in to an organization and start talking about gagne kirkpatricks levels and measurable objectives people are probably going to laugh us out of the door. we need to move out of the bubble and take a multidisciplinary approach to issues that is our strength. it is also becoming much more effective to shield our methods and processes and only talk about results in a language that others can relate to. i find that this is a skill not many people pay attention to. a hr/training professional tries to talk in terms of roi metrics like "learning" whereas management is interested in "cost". a smart professional should link the two and present it in the first place. here is an excerpt from a t&d astd editorial from one of their earlier editions xpress yourself in the language of business. talk in terms of results. make sure that performance solutions are always in the mix. talk with your peers but more important talk to others in your organization in other departments. read the business pages in your newspaper and make sure you fully understand the forces shaping your specific organization. as your business acumen grows so does your value..." any comments or experiences to share? ram
Citehr - push to create more business for consulting firms / consultants
We understand that a lot of our members are consultants and we are now going to focus on trying to help them gain more business. to do this we would first require to gain the confidence of the corporates by highlighting the specialties of the consultants and consulting firms. from the beginning we always knew that the core of this knowledgebase is going to be the knowledge that our consulting members will share and in the initial days we had a feature called the cbox which highlighted the user s special interests and area of work. that feature kind of got dropped when we moved to a different software and was never redeveloped. the segregation of "market threads" is a start and will allow people to keep updated on various requests. however we do not really have a deep understanding of how this consulting market works so i request all members to put in their thoughts. like for example what information do corporates look for when they are looking for independent or small consulting firms? what helps them choose? how do they find them? how do consultants find work? etc etc... regards sid
