This post is to initiate a discussion/debate on the desirable HR competencies in the area of Performance Appraisal? What are the strategies adopted by the HR personnel to ensure a smooth functioning of the appraisal process?

Performance appraisal parameters vary from sector to sector, hence it is the duty of the HR personnel to keep the company policies in mind and function accordingly. It is also necessary that the company frequently update their appraisal system to deal better with changing conditions.
I think the various competencies required by a HR professional when it comes to performance appraisal include:
1. business savvy
2. ability to convince
3. well versed with the company policies
4. talent retention and management
5. ability to negotiate
hope these can help a HR deal with any challenges that crop up during appraisal
