One of my colleagues has asked me about the available provision under any Act or any G O that can allow the employer to install CCTV cameras in their establishment as the union is objecting to install cameras at shop floor area, but management wants to install it. Kindly suggest

There is no such law which regulates use of CCTVs.
Thing to be noted is office feels security requirement exists, they are at liberty to go ahead.
Unions normally object to CCTV as it records employees and their activities which they feel violates privacy.
Board clearly informing all that area is under electronic surveillance should be prominently displayed.

Hello Giri,
More than any Law, usually CCTVs are installed on instructions from the Local Police.
At least in cities, ALL shops/factories are suggested to install CCTVs by the Police.
Check-out with your local SP........no point approaching the lower police officials for such issues, as you may get misleading/round-about replies.

Dear Nathrao/ Dear Tajsteesh,
Thank you very much for your response, as per the public safety act the local police advised to install cctvs at the entrance, exit and parking area. But to install at shopfloor area, receiving resistance from unions. If there is any guidelines from anybody like govt or police, it is easy for us to convince them. Otherwise the relation will become strain. We are thinking on that aspect.

In Tamil Nadu, the guidelines in the following Govt Order are to be followed in respect of CCTVs, which might be a useful for your purpose, in case you decide to go ahead with installation.
