I am taking over as Training and Placement Officer at a small engineering college and there is a huge responsibility on me to get the students placed. I want to start my reign by concentrating mainly on training and making students ready for corporate.
I am completely layman for the job and need to thoroughly plan my training schedule.
I will appreciate if people having experience in this field will help me with identifying the areas to concentrate and if I get some ready made techniques.
The students are very weak at my Institute.

Dear Jaya
There are three aspects you need to concentrate. A) see that the students develop their communication skills. You have to do certain speaking activities on a regular basis. Weekly two classes for every student to create an occasion to speak on a dais. This should be a continuous activity for every student. B) employability skills for 3rd year students. How to write a resume, Group discussion capabilities, presentation skills facing the interviews etc. And C) campus to corporate skills like how to build teams and working in teams, team leadership, good interpersonal skills etc. Overall skills like developing a positive attitude, motivation, communication skills etc are to be done on a regular basis. As a beginning you invite some SS trainers within your budget so that he will give you the momentum to the whole activity for you in how to make a beginning. If need be there, just call me. Thanks

Aside from what Mr. KS Rao has rightly suggested(Communication, resume writing, group discussion and mock interviews), also please focus on getting your students prepare for Aptitude tests as that is the first step in any recruitment process.

Dear Jaya S Singh,
As a placement officer, it is your duty to train students in communication skills. when they speak english, they can have employment.
During the I year, you can make arrangements to teach them speaking and reading english and it they understand english, they can pick up any other subject easily.
In II and III year, you can train them in other activities required for placement.
In a small engineering college, students must have come from mother tongue medium and so teach them good translation methods to learn english.
I conduct training in such manner and I am also a staff in Indian Overseas Bank and can work as consultant or train your own staff to handle such areas.Prior to joining, IOB, i worked in Indian Air Force for 20 years . you can mail me at babubless@gmail.com or call on 9364292705
