Hi, I want to know that during background check verification in an IT company, does they check upon the projects mentioned in CV and the duration as well ?
From India, Delhi

Of course they do check each and everything, that is why in an IT company background verification takes almost a month.

I extended the current project tenure as I was more comfortable in answering interview questions from this project,
But now as I have reached the joining date of the reputed MNC, I realized that it might go against me in background verification if during HR/supervisor/third-paty conversation they cross check all the projects tenure from my CV.
I am in tension now, please guide me how to get out of this situation.
Please Please suggest !!

Dear Anonymous,

It is highly unlikely that a background check will cover and / or validate the projects or their duration etc which have been mentioned by you in your CV.

Fundamentally, information of this nature is company confidential information. It would not be shared with external parties like background checking companies.

Normally, aspects that are checked as a part of background checking, are the following:

- Personal Information like Name, Nationality, Gender, Date of Birth, Father’s Name, Present / Permanent Address, Phone numbers, etc

- Academic Qualifications like Class XII, Graduation etc with details e.g., Year of Passing, College Name, Course Name, Roll No, etc

- Work Experience viz., Record of Previous Jobs, Name of Company, Designation, Duration of employment, etc. This would include reference checks as well as professional certifications / memberships, if any.

- Criminal record - validation with Police if the candidate has a criminal track record

- Drug Testing. Some organisations require candidates to undergo medical tests specifically directed at identifying if there is a history of drug abuse.

- Financial track record: Some organisations require a tracking of the financial history of candidates, whether or not they have liens / civil judgements / bankruptcy cases / financial fraud complaints etc

- Validation of Photograph and Biometrics. These are normally done only via the National Skills Registry

However, what can be expected is that if you have stated that as a result of handling / executing a project you have acquired certain skills, then the prospective employer would test your levels of competence in these areas.

All the best.

Thnaks Raju Bhatnagar for sharing the information.
Also I would like to know as most of the IT companies keep their client information confidential, is it legal to mention the client-project name in the CVs ?

From India, Delhi

Hi Amit,

Most companies get employees to sign confidentiality undertakings when they join a company. This undertaking usually states that any information that is not available in the public domain should not be disclosed by the employee, if it is company confidential information.

Strictly speaking, mention of client name or project description can be viewed as a violation of this undertaking.

However, most companies don't take umbrage at client names being mentioned in a CV, but one should be aware of the downside.

Some individuals play safe and don't mention the name of the client in the CVs but give adequate indications of the client (e.g., instead of mentioning Coca Cola Company, one can refer to it as a Fortune 500 beverages company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia). A similar approach can also be taken for projects, targeted at highlighting skill sets / experience / knowledge etc acquired during the project.

During the interview, one can discuss more openly.
