Age is only a number now..The concept of employability (not employment) has undergone a change after the advent of information technology and service sector. During the period preceding 90s, the thinking used to be conventional and thus people used to go for jobs that guarantee job security, steady income and a retired life after 60 years.Thus majority during the relevant period tried to settle in government jobs or public sector jobs or in blue chip manufacturing companies.This conventional thinking did not make an employee in that era to venture much to leave their jobs because they used to think that they were not employable at that senior level.The advent of new age technology and new age business and industry laid emphasis on the skills and used to repose faith in those who can build blocks if given bricks and mortar without reference to their age.Even companies are willing to employ women who took a long break for family reasons Therefore if you have right set of skills, I hope you can definitely find some company to utilize them no matter you are 49 years.be positive and anticipating and ye shall find what ye seek one day.

Be very clear why you are looking to change the job. What exactly are your employment frustrations which are pushing you out of your current organization? What do you find most exciting and attracting when you look at the \'greener pastures\'?
These two coordinates will determine your exact position in the job market.
The question raised by you belies an inner turbulence of high magnitude.
So most of the available jobs are being offered to Gen Y! well, i guess you know your niche well. This is the ripe time to acquire those skills which are a) in high demand in the industry today , b) it is not easy to find professionals have that skill at the required level of expertise c)you can deliver intuitively the outcome of the role which you want to play.
It is not getting any job @ 49! It is getting a job which enables you to contribute better and perform even better in all the projects.
Also, your ability to deal with 20 something colleagues will matter a lot as they have a preset notion that you might be over the hill.
Think clearly about the role, assignment, education investment, compensation and benefits most relevant to you life stage now,your ability to adapt quickly to diverse organizational values and culture, your technical as well as business acumen.

I am also of the opinion that age is only a Number.
It does not indicate the ability of the individual.
It does not indicate the mental maturity of the individual
It does not indicate the self confidence of the individual,
It does not indicate the physical capacity of the individual
It does not indicate the courage of the individual to face challenges
Whatever may be the deficiency as to the above, even then, there are people who can deliver goods.
Doctors also generally say, for any illness, age must be the reason . They depend on the Lab reports which some times get changed or erratic. The Lab result also vary from method to method and equipment to equipment and make of the equipment,
For example the reading of Blood sugar varies with the make of Glucomeres and the normal method adopted in the Lab for measuring the Blood sugar.
BP also varies from time to time and also depends on the mood of the patient. if he is hungry and has some anxiety or fear or worry or tired after a brief walk it may vary. In olden days BP is generally checked in the early mornings asking the patient to lie on the bench or testing table. Generally I have seen the BP, Sugar, TPR etc. are taken in the early hours by the night shift Nurses. Some Doctors insist the patient to have the Lab Test in a specific Lab. The saying that Doctors get commission from the specified Lab is another story, these are not relevant to this subject.
People in the helm of affairs as President, Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers etc. might not have been in such position if age is taken as an important issue. The ex Chief Minister,of Tamilnadu Mr.Karunanithi is nolw above 89 years and he is still aspiring for the political leadership. What was the age of Mr. Giri and other Senior Leaders when they were occupying key position of decision making in the central Government.
Did they not do their duties. The criticism and their response if any may be different.
In view of the above I appreciate and comment on your reply and also encourage Mr.Sen Guptha to update his knowledge and be equipped to face any challenge and wish him Good-Luck..

Yes. It is very difficult to get a job at the age of 49 if you are already out of job for more than 2 to 3 months. Though people talk about something like age is not a criteria etc. off course, It is a hidden criteria and most probably you will end of not getting any job. This is a fact and it is out of my own experience. I have worked 27 years in IT industry and always been a 1 or 2 rater. I have resigned from my job because of office politics and out of frustration. The only mistake I did was leaving the job without having another offer at hand. Now I am jobless and finding difficulty on how to spend my time though i don\'t have a financial problem. Hope this helps the younger generation. Never ever leave your job without having any offer at hand if you really want to continue your career. This is my best advise.

Thanks everybody for your Comments, guidance & support. Am still active & capable enough to deliver. Just to get a Suitable Job to change from current Company with satisfaction. Nothing else. Though financial issue is there, still I can manage & will satisfy with an average Salary with my Wife & ailing Mother. Thanks once again.

Thanks Mr. Ratan Prakash for your valuable suggestion. I was also thinking on this whether should I take the risk. But I did n't want to change my previous Job unless the Management was creating problem to continue my Service. I was in a plan to continue till my retirement age & I was happy with my Job. But unfortunately this Current Job is not proved to be very satisfactory as Job satisfaction is not there, Work culture is terrible, its a Govt Project which delaying to make me so tensed, financial issue with my Company & this Govt. Project is another aspect. In this stage I feel very insecured. That's why I was asking all of your suggestion. But going through all of your feedback it seems for experienced & mid aged Professionals the door is supposed to be closed in Indian Market. Very strange to think. Am much disturbed.

Thanks for coming out with your real problem/issue. Its hard to share it in public forum and I can understand how difficult it is for you and so for Vchamku.
The fight for right job, with right environment and right salary and right people, is a never ending fight and we service class employees always have to compromise somewhere. Yes, specifically in IT Sector, the challenge is from new generation who are not only smart but very proactive and faster besides being techno savvy and ready to adapt to any environment faster. So, in IT you will have to complete with new generation staff.
If you have to change, focus your energies on SME's and companies you see have not been IT enabled due to reasons. SME and Startup "value" experience staff, but are not in position to pay the high salary that market demands. So, you need to find the right match and right company. Don't wait for the company to advertise for a job, approach them with a solution from your experience on industries that you feel you have an edge and expertise.
