Good Day, I have been working with Shipping & Logistics company from past 2 years as an Executive Assistant to MD. I have just received one more offer from Rose International Pvt. Ltd., they are into manufacturing/exporting high end jewellery and distribution of Luxurious watches and luxurious apparels. About my background, I did an MBA in operations management from Mumbai University prior to that I have worked with KPO as a Senior Analyst for 2 yrs.
Please suggest, career prospect as an Executive Assistant, is there any career growth in terms of designation and monetary. What after Executive Assistant?
Thank you for your assistance.

Dear Vishal,

You have given information about your past and the future assignment that you may take up. Nevertheless, one vital point was missed on the designation that Rose International will offer you. What would be your designation.

Coming to your query. Your career appears to be wavy or ripple like. The ripples are formed out of joining dots of unconnected companies. Your first job had nothing to do with second. The qualification has nothing to do with either job. Is the third job connected with your past two jobs or your qualification?

The post of Executive Assistant offered to junior MBAs so that they take up job of manager in some department. With good qualification behind, why you do not wish to slip into the role of manager in the same company or at least any other company? Why your current company did not make any career plan for you?

As such you had been working right under the nose of top boss. This must have given good exposure to leadership style of your boss, his decision making capabilities, negotiations for various reasons etc. Why not to put the learning on use for the benefit of your career's growth?

To answer your query, "is there any career growth in terms of designation and monetary". Executive Asst does not have any career growth as such. You are not Executive Secretary where you can afford to stagnate forever in the same role or position forever.

My views may appear little severe but unless we take critical look, some good ideas do not emerge.

All the best!

Dear Mr. Dinesh,
Thank you for reply.
Sorry to miss that. Rose International is offering same designation as EA to MD. The current organization I am working was started in mid of 2012, is still at the nascent stage of developing whilst facing some financial problems, we have not received salaries for many months, current company will certainly offer growth only when it grows which is still a moot point. Hence, I am looking for change as I am unable to fulfill some personal obligations. Rose International seems to be a good company, but ain't sure whether they will provide any opportunities to EA's to the next level of managerial position.
Please suggest.
Thank You!!
Regards,
Vishal

Dear Vishal,

Has the Rose International provided the Job Description of this position? Will you end up becoming Executive Secretary in the garb of Executive Assistant? Please check.

It is appears that you have not made proper Career Development Plan (CDP). Please search this forum for "Career Planning" and you will get lot of posts. As a part of the career plan, you need to do SWOT Analysis. Click the following links to check my past replies on these two subjects:

Since you are MBA (Ops), you should have joined in some Operations Department. If not Ops then at least Purchase or Administration. There is growth in each of this department. You could have used some knowledge of your MBA. With so many years passed after MBA, I doubt whether you remember any of those management concepts that you had learnt. Anyway now also you can correct your course.

All the best!

Dear Dinesh Sir,

Below is the JD they have provided;

Designation - Executive Assistant - Managing Director

Brief of the Job Profile -

Managing the calendar including meetings, contacts and interactions.

Organizing Business Meeting with proper interaction and co-ordination with Clients.

Power point presentations, Conferences.

Liaising with International buyers on trade related issues

External & Internal interface on behalf of MD

Open, sort, and distribute incoming correspondence

Retrieve corporate documents, records, and reports.

My role in current company do provides an opportunity to get involve, execute and implement skills of Business Administration, as I am the one, who look after Cash flows, P&L, BS of project we did in past (1 Project only till date), IT implementation & HR policies sometimes. But, somehow we are not getting much projects to execute as business is very slow, it has become difficult to survive financially. Hence, I am looking for change and a bit skeptical about JD/role being provided by Rose International.

I would definitely follow your articles on SWOT and do implement into real life.

Given the JD above, please suggest what do you feel. Is it worth joining there or not ? or I'll be wasting my competency there ? It's very true that even I don't want to be EA for all my life.

I am also planning to pursue CFA certification and do CS in near future (Once I'll sound good financially).

Tonne of Thanks for your replies.

Regards,

Vishal Londhe.

Dear Vishal,

I have gone through the JD that you have given. Rose International is smart enough to make a blend of both the posts i.e. Executive Secretary and Executive Assistant. Hire Exe Asst and as such you get Exe Secretary free? Quite smart!

Anyway, their smartness apart, as of now what you need is good job where you can take care of your finances. Therefore, whether to join or not that is your call. My concern is towards your career advancement. Ask them what plan they have to absorb in some another department as Asst Manager or so.

By the way, in this forum I have given one more reply related to Executive Asst post. Though it does not relate to your query, yet you may go through it. The link is as below:

As far as advancing qualification is concerned, nothing wrong per se. But then you just cannot go on adding the degrees. What matters is putting into use the knowledge that you have gained. Even now also, you may utilise your MBA (Ops) to your advantage. You may get into Retail Operations. You can also get into Purchase Department where non-technical persons are required. You can also work in back end operations of insurance companies, banks etc.

All the best!
