Correct me if I am wrong. The above problem seems to be of your's and not your friend's.
What could be the probable reason for not serving notice? With the background verification getting critical and significant in recruitment it is always advisable to serve the notice period. You will need to justify the reason be it higher studies, medical or whatever.
If you are joining a new organization you can share the scenario with your prospective employer and get a written confirmation about their consent on your joining without a full and final settlement. They could have bought your notice period if it was a option.
