If you are some one who likes to acquaint yourself with wide spectrum of core HR functions and challenges, you can choose manufacturing sector. The HR in IT sector mostly concerns recruitment and retention but has little room for hard core HR functions like IR, motivation,PMS,training, employee engagement, discipline management, employee welfare and statutory compliances. which manufacturing sector offers.

The basic skills required for a HR for any sector are the same. However since you deal with work force that work on machines but not with pen or key board, Iam of the view that the following skills will be of help to you.
1) Empathizing skills : You need to develop a sense of understanding workers and see the issues from right perspective.
2) Listening skills : Be patient and listen to them but don't shoo them away merely because they often come to you with variety of problems ranging from quality of food to quantity of work given to them.Address grievances promptly. Delay may lead to a potential industrial dispute.
3) Interpersonal skills : You need to be an out going and extrovert person rather than one retreating into a shell since spreading warmth in relations environment is essential and also to help managers identify the cracks in relations among members of the team and harmonize them.
4) Communication skills : It does not mean being talkative. It means conveying things clearly and meaningfully without meaning any hurt to the other party.
5) Visualizing skills : develop ability to anticipate the consequences of your decisions/actions and be proactive in nipping any trouble in the bud.
