One of my friend is a HR Jr. Executive. He is being forced to come in night shift just to manage Canteen affairs between 1.00AM to 5.30 AM. Canteen is being run on contract basis for which subsidy is being paid by the Company for all the three shifts. There is a Canteen Managing Committee also. Pl advise, can the higher management force HR executives to come in night shift for the above purpose.
Hi Arun, YES the management can do so, to safe guard the interest of the employees, and to ensure that the standards of the company are maintained and followed. In fact i would say your friends role in attending to this night shifts is more crucial as he will be the only one to communicate to the management about the performance of the contractor during the said night shifts.

This is addition to what other members have said. Why your friend is taking the decision of management with negative mindset? Tell your friend to give his best to provide the quality food. He can do the following:

a) Study the systems of cooking and find out whether there is any scope for improvement. Is any wasteful expenditure happening? Are there any food wastages?

b) Let him study 5S methods and let him teach those methods to the staffs. He can improve the housekeeping in the canteen as a whole. Let the kitchen be so neat and clean that it should look as if it were a front office.

c) Let him teach hygiene and sanitation to the staffs working in canteen. This is also very important.

d) He can control the unwanted built up of inventory of food items at the canteen. He can help caterer in fixing various stock level like minimum stock, maximum stock, buffer stock etc.

e) Is contractor's vehicle making any unwanted trips from the contractor's warehouse (where food items are stored) to your company? How these can be curtailed?

Your friend has chance to implement his managerial knowledge here. Every savings that you make for the contractor should be passed on the company. This will help your company while negotiating the future contracts.

If your friend shows real interest in doing all this then possibly it will help him in launching his own catering company. After all there is more money in these contracts than slogging on HR desk.

Yes the management has right to ask your friend come in the night shift for the betterment of the workers.
Your friend should take it in Positive manner and it would good for me , as will get good name in the top management if he excel in the job.

Canteen is part of employee welfare. Hence it is not wrong on the part of management to deploy HR, to oversee things.
Similarly, management has every right to ask the employee to work between 1 am and 5.30 am.
On the other hand, if this 1 am to 5.30 am shift is in addition to his 9 hours work, eg: between 9 am to 6 pm at office, then this will amount to violation of employee right.
