Hi friends,
As a placement coordinator I came across many good technical profiles but when it comes to soft skills then there is a challenge. Many of the excellent techies are not able to convey their thoughts properly in a simple plain English. However my suggestion to them is to practice daily.Read English newspaper/watch English news/movies.
Whats your views?
Cheers!

Hi
That is an interesting sharing especially from an academic perspective. I would also recommend readers of this post to go through the Word Power page in the Readers Digest. While the link gives you exposure to new words, the Word Power page supplements the learning with an appropriate sentence in which the word is used to make the understanding more explicit.
Those who are keen to enhance their English Language skills and also get to learn new words and its appropriate usage, are invited to visit the following Motivational and Inspirational Blogs

you are right. I feel very sorry to say that many qualified candidates are unable to express anything properly in a simple language. The take a long time to even utter a few words. They study qualify themselves but fail to improve their communication skills. This has become a big challenge nowadays for youngsters. Parents are aso not worried about their children and it is enough if they make them qualify to earn money. Those days were different.
I am as a Professional observe that most of the qualified and in good position are unale to handle the meetings and conferences properly with their poor communications skills. it is purely left to the individuals and they will have to realise their own problems and try to make up to have a good future.
Hi Puja,
Your comments are valid.
The remedy lies with the individuals.
They must be willing to improve themselves, preferably in the beginning of the career itself.
Writing and speaking simple sentences is the good way to start.

Hi Puja,
Your suggestions are good, however it is important to have good observation skill. People who carefully observer others talking will be able to grasp faster, applies to listening NEWS also.
Apart from this
1. Vocabulary Building
2. Question and Answer practice
3. Practice thinking in English
4. Most importantly speak (Even if it is wrong, somebody will correct)

The importance of the English language cannot be overemphasized. Just type a query on Google "Speak Better English" and you will find about 131,000,000 results in 0.28 seconds.

Comfort with English is almost a prerequisite for career success today, regardless of the industry, proficiency in English is an important factor in both hiring and promotion decisions. A few of us have been fortunate as we studied English in school and are fairly comfortable with reading and writing. However, I've found some hesitate, while speaking because they feel that we lack the fluency when they meet someone who speaks better, and may make grammatical mistakes. These people are afraid of speaking English in formal situations and such people quickly switch to the native language be it at work or in the company of family and friends.

Please be assured there is no quick fix when it comes to improving your command over a particular language. It always requires a lot of time and effort. Thereis a saying in English "Rome was not built in a day." Work on this and you will surely pick up the skills, it's nt impossible.

Millions of tips are available from every quarter. Even reding them is good enought to start off, and here I go with a few.

1. Think in English

The mind is a powerful tool. Use it. Speak to yourself in English and let your thoughts about everything from the local train to the shopping list be in English. Even if you do nothing else, do this!

2. Do not translate from your native language to English

If you do not know the correct sentence or phrase in English, do not ever translate from your native tongue. Doing this will not take you any further in your learning plus you end up becoming a joke. So, find out what the correct usage is by reading or asking someone.

3. Speak English at every opportunity

Don’t worry if it doesn’t sound perfect at first. It’s like driving – initially, the traffic lights and other vehicles will give you a scare but after some practice, you can do it without thinking.

4. Start a conversation with strangers in English. Since you do not know them personally, you will feel less conscious about what they would feel about you.

5. Learn sentences or phrases – don’t concentrate on single words

Instead of concentrating on learning new words by themselves, try using them in a sentence. Learn as sentences, not single words. The aim is to get comfortable speaking; improving your vocabulary is a different lesson.

6. Listen to others speaking English

Listen, listen, listen. Whether it is the radio or the television or a movie. Or a colleague or teacher who speaks good English. Keep listening. This will help you improve pronunciation and accent. Do not imagine that your speaking skills can be enhanced through reading alone.

7. Learn how to say the same thing differently

As with other languages, so in English, one sentence can be framed in multiple ways, all conveying the same meaning. Learning these will help you form clearer and simpler sentences. Learn certain phrases that can be used in multiple situations. Learn how to greet someone properly. Talk slowly and carefully. Don’t rush through your sentences.

Restrict yourself to simple sentences until you gain confidence.

Keep it simple - Do not complicate your goals by trying to accomplish too much. Reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary – they will all come in due course. Your goal is to speak better English. Stick to it.

Do not lose confidence - It is common to lose your drive along the way but if you keep seeing results, no matter how tiny, it will keep up your motivation. So keep note of the little achievements and soon, they’ll add up to a big one – fluent spoken English!

8. Make sure there is someone to correct you if you go wrong

Making mistakes is natural. So there must be someone to correct your English. Speaking it incorrectly for a long time will imprint it in the brain and it’ll be hard to correct later. Ask your friends, relatives and anyone you can to point out your mistakes and correct them. Speak to them in English only. Practice is a must.

9. Do not hesitate. Talk to whoever you can. Decide among your circle of friends that you will only talk in English with each other. This way you can get rid of hesitation and also have your friends correct you when you are wrong.

10. Start a conversation with strangers in English. Since you do not know them personally, you will feel less conscious about what they would feel about you.

11. Maintaining a diary to record the events of your day is a great way to practice your writing skills. Take your time to use new words and phrases when you write in your diary

Learn new words everyday, learn at least one new word every day and use it as a part of your conversation with people. By the end of the week, you should know seven words really well.

Keep a pocket dictionary handy for any word you may need to know the meaning of.

When you hear a new word, try to find its usage and its antonyms.

Raman....what you say is brilliant & I absolutely agree with you.I ask participants to do everything that you mention. What i do before I start doing what you mention is get into the psyche of the participant as it is often an issue around self esteem, attitude & confidence. If these 3 concerns are taken care of the teaching & learning process are so much easier.
There are people who speak terrible English, however, they continue to do so because of their attitude. In time these are the people who practice irrespective of the situation & then go on to perfect the skill. This is the same with making presentations & public speaking
Thanks for very good suggestion. My experiments with the students which is successful. They carry a 100 pages notebook write five words from newspaper they have not understood. Find the meaning and use them in your daily communication. It really helps at the end of the semester the vocabulary improves drastically. Even professionals can try this technique.
Hi Puja,
Wish you a GOOD DAY....
YES...... English News Paper is one of the best sources to know and learn in a better way English vocabulary.
I learnt like this only....... But I will not buy daily News Paper. I will buy only on Sundays and I will read the same news Page 1 to last page....for the whole week.... every day repeatedly. This makes you slowly to understand the English words with respect meanings.... I myself found that there was tremendous and remarkable recovery towards my vocabulary... Better start with " Letters to the Editor: column where people use to write with simple english and anybody can understand those who knows basic english...
