Dear Friend,

Within the perspective of an HR Trainee one should keep looking at other HR professionals on how and what they do? Its a good learning by practical examples and keen observations when somebody is around you or simply helping HR professional in small tasks. It could be also looking at an HR person taking in an interview or another person making salaries and attendance or another person imparting training to a team of professionals. Remember in a plane there are two pilots one is co-pilot and other one is senior. This co-pilot looking at the senior pilot, observing him for a few years becomes a senior pilot. That's why many management colleges have made internship programmes mandatory with an objective students will learn by examples.

The job responsibilities of a trainee would differ from company to company and would also depend on the company's size. There are bigger companies where within the HR department the sub-sections are segregated like Talent Acquisition (Recruitments), Payroll, Time Office, Attendance, Statutory Compliance, Training and Development, Organisational Development (OD) and Performance Management Systems (PMS) etc. and also there are small setups where there are just 2-3 HR professionals who do everything into HR.

If you're absolutely fresher it's a right time for you to decide what do you wish to pursue in HR. Based on your interest you may observe other HR people and follow their instructions for doing small tasks/activities. For example if you like Talent Acquisition then you should focus on how to take the interviews, what questions to be asked, how to shortlist a CV, how to find out difference between a good CV and an irrelevant one, you need to also learn on various profile's job description and specifications for various openings that your Organisation may have.

In general you may also study the company's Organisation Structure, hierarchy level, various roles and their job responsibilities, ways and means through which people are hired, to read and understand HR policies, specifically read policies on appraisals and promotions, you may also learn to know the challenges faced during recruitments etc.

Another first important job of trainee is to know the Organisation completely.
