Hi Sir,

I worked for a US based Financial institution. My official userid is hacked and some third party has loged in to company's web application and worked on the details of company data, by changing my password with the help of hint question. When I came to knew about this I immediately informed my Manager and the High level Management.

After a research and interrogation the management which involved in the investigation process taken the decision to terminate me from services with a reason stating I have changed my password many number of times using a local server. But I have never logged in Company's application from outside / or anyother server. I approached and requested the investigation of the Ombudsman into the matter. But the case is closed, stating the that they can not reveal any info to me and my job cannot be reinstated. I am confused now, I am not understanding what I should do and whom to approach for justice. I have always given my best services to the company. Please suggest me.

Hello Madhavaking,
Suggest take the help of the Cyber Crimes cell of the Police [since you are located in Hyderabad, FYI this is located @ CCS, Bashirbagh].
You may be asked to file a formal complaint.
Though usually it's the company's job to do so, since you are the affected/aggrieved Party, I THINK you can too.
All the Best.
Rgds,
TS

There seems to be more in this story than what is being revealed.

What industry is it ?

How long did the hacker stay in the system

When did you know password was changed and how quickly did you report it ?

How do you know, for example, that the password change is with the help of hint question (I do not know of any corporate server that provides hint question for lost password. It will always insist on password reset by administrator)

I suspect that the hacker got access to some very sensitive data (is this a Bpo Handling banking information ?) that would have caused a major embarrassment or potentially loss of a customer. Every company has rules with regards to password - not to share the password, to keep strong password, etc. apparently you didn't keep a strong password. Further, your company definitely believes you shared your password with someone. In that case, they are fully in their rights to terminate you for violation of your terms if employment.

You have appealed to the hr ombudsman, which indicates that your company has a serious redressal system. The ombudsman rejected your appeal. I do not think there is anything else you can do unless you believe the ombudsman is biased.

It's time you moved on and looked for another job.

Dear Saswata,

Madhava has not revealed whether proper domestic enquiry was conducted, whether he was given chance to explain his position. Therefore, we cannot say that nothing can be done now.

For Madhava: - I recommend you writing second post with complete sequence of events. You should begin when did you discover that password was hacked and end with your termination. If the principles of natural justice were not followed then you can challenge the termination.

Ok...
