Hi Sree,

Q.Can any of the practising HR Professionals explain their typical day as an HR? Its interesting for HR aspirants to know about the daily activities of a HR Professional.

Ans. See Sree you have asked to answer a question which has so and so many answers, thus in a nutshell I just wanted to say this only it totally depends upon for which industry do you work for [means small or large] ..what is employee strength.. do they have seperate departement for each field of HR like for T&D different, PA different, Recruitment different etc etc. and if its small organisation then a hr person will be having different activities to perform in a single day, depending upon his priorities. E.G. if the recruitment is going on then of course searching the resumes, shotlisting the selected one., calling the candidates, doing the interviews [personally or telephonically] for the selected one and part of it doing his/her daily work like checking mails and if he/she has to make some presentation for the future manpowr then judgeing/doing that as well. etc etc. similarly respective work loads for the other departments as well. and for a small organisation depending upon the priority, can take the interviews, can give the induction to the new employee, do the admin part etc etc.

Means depends upon work, organisation size etc. etc

I hope this solves the question!!!!!!!!

Dear Rekha,
Sorry, but this only adds more confusion.
You've just mentioned few ponts which is there in text books, which students learn theoritically.
I just want to know what a real HR professional does.
For example, if you dont mind, can you please explain what you do in a day in office, as an HR Executive?

No Sree,
I guess dear you have got me wrong........ u asked such a question which will have varied answers [depends upon once job profile].
Anyways, if u asked abt mine, since I am the only one who looks after hr and admin thus my workload has increased a bit. Now a days I check official / personal mails, then screening resumes [as we require few prograammers], calling cadidates which I feel good one for the interview, sending the whole report to my US management regarding recruitment work and daily work update of all the employees. A part from this I am working on a Staff Development Model. I've got some research work to do as well. so thats all for quite sometime.

A typical HR's day... as Rekha rightly pointed out, depends on the industry, company size, employee strength etc etc. A typical small sized software company's HR day...

-- Check mails

-- Check the profiles that have come in

-- Shortlist profiles

-- Call the candidates for interviews

-- Call up consultants enquiring for the candidates that didnt turn up yesterday

-- Send mails to various campus coordinators

-- Discussions with Managers and MD

-- Brain Storm different ways of sourcing candidates

-- Send weekly points to staff

-- Change ad content on various websites and portals

-- Network with people

-- Talk to employees around

-- Call up sick employees to find out how they are feeling

-- Check CiteHR's latest posts

-- Conduct interviews

-- Employee complaints and related issues

-- Clean up all messy table covered with papers

-- Inter office memos

-- Read articles

-- Attend calls and other requests

-- Personnel Management

etc etc ....

Hi Sree,

Hey that's a good question..as Rekha rightly pointed out that it all depends upon the industry..N of course Orange's response was really cool one..he has covered most of the activities which includes reading citehr postings. :D .!!(frankly i just don't get the time :( )

Lemme share my typical work day..I head the HR department of MNC flavour house in Mumbai..

* Morning meetings with MD & others to address & discuss the Key issues

* Handling recruitment process which includes networking with contacts & consultants.

* Interviews

* Studying the C&B trends & negotiating the salaries.

* Advising the locational heads on the personnel matters

* Employee's relations -(covered by Orange)

* Identifying the problem areas & brainstorming the solutions..

* Anticipating the changes & taking pro-active measures

* Strategizing with MD on Key Personnel issues vis-a-vis Business Goals.

* Handling Union matter issues.

* Training related matters - new programs ..training effectiveness...

* Most importantly observing & talking to employees, understanding their behaviour etall..

well that covers most of it...sounds simple..but's takes a lot of effort & time..believe me it's a great experience..just don't realise how time flies..

Cheerio,

Hey Rajat... I agree with you that all these activities are very time consuming and energy draining. Time really just flies. I would like to mention some others also like induction, training and development et all which happens not every day but very time consuming.... Btw Rajat, Orange is a she and not he
