Dear All,
I am organising 'Cleaning contest' in office amongst all departments. All the departments are supposed to clean their respective workareas, cupboards, arrange documents, label files, etc. There will be asessment and three winners will be declared.
Pls suggest me some good ideas and some assessment criteria for the same.
Regards,
Khyati Chauhan

Hi Khyati ,
Instead of calling it as 'Cleaning contest' you can call it as 'Housekeeping contest' .
You can use 5' S principles for asessment .Through this the system also will be
in place .

Dear Ms. Khyati Chauhan,

The workplace station that is aimed to fit in the right ambience as well the improvement on cleanliness ergonomically to provide the productivity of work thus reducing any work related complaints. Mostly, buinesses provide computers to e-file (improved type data storing) the required docs instead to file them physically. Besides your notion [Cleaning Contest] is actually a worthy outline including slight fun for all the employees to participate in it.

Regardless to the fact, workstations if not kept clean would descend with lot of germs- infested, therefore to the point of CLEANING ACTIVITY --

- 1 minute WIPE -UP Skrimish: All the employees would be given 1 minute to wipe down their computers/ workstations provided the one who is within & faster would get a gift.

- Shredd papers to bin: Give 'em atleast of 20 minutes to remove the unwanted and untidy papers cleant from the desk. Another 20 mins for the racks. so that would count a total to 40 minutes and some one who hits the clock within this may be given the "BEST LIMPIDNESS AWARD" to boost spirits in others.

- Queue the Dossier: This should be funny and amusing. you may consider this with expanded time span as files are a bit important and requires no hurry. You may plan the assessment on the files assembled & labelled accurately.

The benefits of the above may improve more working space and less strain to amplified results.
Hi Khyati,
It is great idea. With the contest of House keeping or Cleaning as you name it, if you keep a session to impart knowledge on Green Cleaning will be an good idea to use opportunity to make them aware of and responsible for Green cleaning.
1. Use of Environment Friendly Green Chemicals
2. Use of Bio degradable office and wash room products
3. Minimizing use of Electricity
4. Recycling and properly disposing of e waste etcs.
All the best

Excellent idea by Kyati Chauhan.
As suggested by Rajeev Dixit, it is better to title it a 5S contest. It will thus go beyond just cleaning which may get delegated to the lowest level of employees. It will also introduce a complete system, which already has the details worked out. A short training in 5S can be also provided to all. An office following the 5S will strike anyone poitively upon entering the place.
This contest can be made periodical, say quarterly. Awards can be by rotating trophy also.

As suggested by our experts, please consider 5S. Divide the departments in teams and call for an individual effort that builds into a team effort. It would then no longer matter who did it, but the fact that the work gets done, as the points are calculated on the basis of team performance. It becomes a team-building activity too.

The standards are easy to explain and manage. Its all about de-cluttering and removing what shouldn't be where. Suppose you are auditing a workstation which is spec clean. But there is a file lying on the table, which should have been in the cupboard. This would lead to a negative marking for the team.

The 5S model helps in building even a though process, once inculcated. Hence, might interest the employees even beyond the contest. Please look for the 5S assessment model and define the best for your office. You will find pdf and ppt in our community, explaining the concept elaborately. Please raise the questions that you face as you work along .

Here's an article for your consideration Think 5S
5S is a simple but very effective system to keep the office clean, remove clutter and save time.
5S when put in place will be a routine activity to maintain the cleanliness.
5S training for the employees will motivate and make them aware of the importance of this activity.

Dear Khayati ,
As per my view you can do one thing you can put a polite email to all HODís and ask them to inform their associate to clean their workstation as there is a cleaning inspection .
Hopefully this will meet as you required .
Dear Khyati,
We wish you all the best. Once this project gets over, please consider sharing the challenges you faced and the lessons you learnt. Its a great encouragement for all of us to see a project successfully implemented . Looking forward to hear from you.
