Dear Kulkarni,
If you are preparing a comprehensive Competency-based skill matrix, there are two ways that I have used for the MNCs that I have worked for. These can be used to map skills for any category of staff:
1. DACUM - Developing a curriculum: A long process.
2. CUDBAS - Similar to DACUM but quicker.
I am sorry that I can't send attachments due to company restrictions. Please surf the net for the materials.
Hope this helps.

Hi Kulkarni,
1. Understand and list down all the activities the X-ray technician would be doing in his role.
2. Against each of these activities, let the individual rate his or her skill level on a scale of 1-5 (1 being zero knowledge/skill and 5 being expert/trainer level skill).
3. Now compare the self-assessed rating of an individual with the target skill rating given by his manager or leader.
4. The gap between the target skill required and self-assessment by an individual will help you prioritize training needs of an individual. Based on this, the team training leader can arrange for training.
Tips: In order to ensure that the individual gets basic knowledge of all the activities, initial onboarding for this role is recommended. This will help the individual reach a level of 2 on the rating of 1-5 on most of the knowledge/skill areas.
After this, based on the role, let the individual spend some time with his senior/expert for the next 6 months, where he or she will learn better tips and be confident enough to work independently. This will help them reach a rating of 3, which is given for adequate knowledge/skill to work independently. In the same manner, an individual can reach a 4 or 5 rating depending on the expertise gained in operation and troubleshooting of equipment.
Hope this helps, regards,
K. Kumar
