Dear friend,

It is something surprising that you put a question on the job chart of HR Manager without knowing the basic structure and qualities of an HR Manager. I think you do not fully aware of the Human Resource activities. That is why you have posed that question. HR Manager's functions are not part time as you think. It is a full time job. Throughout the year, the HR Manager has to work for the development of the organization as well as for the wellbeing of the work folk. Not only recruitment, training and development, compensation processes, but also there are som any activities that the HR Manager has to perform in his capasity as an Human Resource person. You cannot simplify the recruitment process as a one time activitiy in an year, there are wo many processes to be taken into consideration for finalization of the recruitment of the personnel required for the firm or company. It is not so easy to analyse and identify the person needed for the specific job. There are many factors which are to be taken into account while finalizing the selection process. Further training and development is a long term process for which the HR Manager has to take into account the requirements of the company for personnel administration, the techniques, the guidelines, the concept, the policy, the procedure, the content, behaviour, the culture. the job analysis, the job design, and job requirements. The HR Manager has to make out a strategic plan/plans through out the year to get his personnel trained in a suitable and beneficial way to suit to the needs of the company and make them efficient to work in the process of business promotion and development of the company, keeping in view the vision and mssion of the Company.

Anaother important task of the HR Manager is the process of Performance appraisal of the employees for which the HR Manager has to work out a strategy to develop the performance of each and every individual and make them suitable to the company needs. There are various designs of the Performance appraisal i.e., 360 degree or 180 degree performance appraisal. The HR Manager has to look into all aspects of generalisation of the tendencies of his employees, their nature of activities, their behavioural attitudes, their culture, their mannerisms, and their commitment towards the company. It is not so easy for any HR Manager unless it is scientifically activated and technially motivated, for which the HR Manager requires full attention on this aspect. This is not a part time activity. It is a full time process for which the HR Manager has to work hard to realize better results in his efforts.

Apart from the official processes, the HR Manager will face some other personal problems with the staff members for which the HR Manager has to act tactfully to have a transparent system of Administration to avoid un-necessry criticism by the employees. The HR Manager has to observe the psychological tendencies of the employees, their mannerisms, their behaviour and try to understsand the problems of the employees in greater detail, and make them suitable to the needs of the company, irrespective of the fact that they have personal problems, and make sure to get the employees tendency changed towards the pronmotional activities of the company or firm. Humanistic approach, human touch, humanitarian considerations are some of the factors which are to be keep in mind by everyb HR Manager for the wellbeing of tbe employees vis-a-vis the Organizational developments in all aspects to realize specific objectives of the firms.

Taking into accout the various job activities to be carried out by an HR Manager, one can think how the HR Manager will work during the entire period of one year, and may understood the concept of the Human Resource Activities that are to be performed by HR Manager through out the year.

Hi,

Your right. It is not that to say were some people commented that your are not a HR person and some say your not aware of HR process. In fact that is nothing required to say HR needs a person through out a year. Even if HR manager decides to take a person for a particular post he ultimately have to check with department head with whom the person going to be recruited his up to mark Or any use to them. Hence HR person is just a mediator and he can not decide anything of his own. Even salary part of it he has to get concurrence from finance for this commitment, what you say is correct for dedicate HR department. They can outsource this.

In fact after completion of XLRI first batch of HR course ( if I am right 1980's) they were not been responded by Market. Then XLRI decided to inject this people to market through Lean Management, Head cuts and other lousy techniques. After that this HR people were in the market for more than 5 years earning a lot of sum and sent out many skilled people out with out knowing the impact of the company future.

If you look at it today many of them are having their own out sourcing company. This is FACT to-day.They knew that they do not have full time job,

Hi,
A kingdum will not survive only with the King!!! He alone cannot gives justice unless he knows the rout cause of the problem. An organisation is also like that, It would not do the business properly, unless a HR person takes care of its problem. HR Person is a king maker, but not a king, to just make a decision based on the differant options available. He is the one who gives different options with his analytical ability, which definetely needs a liogical and regioning ability as well as the study of entire organisation from strategic point of view, which would not happen in a short period of time.

There is no purpose getting offended. Plenty of non-HR personnel in an organization have similar doubts. It may not be surprising to hear such statements sometimes even from the CEOs/ CFOs/ Functional Heads. Some of them do feel, especially in small/ medium size organizations, that HR is an avoidable over-head. That is how new concepts such as 'Out source your HR' have evolved over the years.

We need not be threatened, but we need to analyse why such a loose talk takes place. Are we not marketing ourselves adequately? Are we living in our pigeon holes, isolated from the business environment? Is our HOD unable to project our contribution to the organization? Do we understand ourselves how the operations will suffer if we do not perform some of our daily tasks? Are we in a position to contribute to business growth? Are we able to project adequately how we impact the top/ bottom line? How are we analysing that today we are an efficient cost - center & have a vision to become a profit center too? Whom all are we meeting everyday in the organization & with what agenda? What are the topics we have picked up for discussions during the monthly management meetings? Are we ready with our presentations & discussions? What changes have be brought about in HR management ever since we joined the organization? And plenty more of similar soul-searching questions ? ? ?.........

If we are examining these issues regularly & are questioning our own existence, others may soon stop to be over inquisitive about 'what we do?'.

I guess this question comes more from ignorance than anything else, I can only say the role is both "transactional" and "transformational."

One is within a time frame the other is never ending, and so I might sum up by saying it not a few month's in a year or year's job, it's life long.

We live on this planet called 'earth," the third in the solar system. The earth spins on it's axis 24 hours a day, that's all. You do not know about this because you can't see it spin, but yes the day break and the end of day signifies somthing happened. It's a transaction. This goes on one day after the other, whether we are able to see the sun or stars or not. These are series of transactions. Soemwhere else transformation is occuring - in terms of seasons, weather, vegetaion etc. These are aspects that are linked to our life. We grow from being children to adulats then oder citizens, and one day we leave this world, we get transformed, through a series of transactions.

So if you ask what does the earth do?

The simplest asnwer would be it rotates on it's axis 24x365, and if you say is that all that the earth does we will have to go back to history.

In this case too I would sincerely suggest that one understands the subject and then explore what all can be done because the job of a HR person is even beyond the job description.
