Dear Colleagues,

I am working as Head – HR with an auto ancillary company. This unit is situated a little far off from the city and due to traffic congestion and pathetic road condition, one way travel time is almost 1.5 hrs. We work for six days a week and as a good gesture of Management, our working time has been fixed from 8.00 AM to 4.30 PM with ½ hr lunch in between. All staff members reside at the main city and for ferrying the employees, company has hired an a/c bus. However, employees are finding it difficult to maintain work – life balance and have reached me to provide a solution. I want to introduce 5 days working or 5 and ½ days (Saturday - half day). My senior colleagues are not in favour of this as they feel, it is against the provisions of factories act.

I request to all the HR Colleagues to provide me with the solution or by telling me the name of the manufacturing companies which, I am sure, might be following eight and half hours working a day and still having five days or five and half days working a week.

Please help if you have the appropriate solution.

Regards,

Dear Rakesh,
As per the factories act, the working hours shall be 48 hours per week. It is your conveyant you need to maintain in a week time the total working hours should be 48 hours. As per your compnay convenient you may follow either 5 days a week or 5 and 1/2 days a week.

Dear Mr. Rakesh,
Please note that Factory Act provides the upper limits only; i.e., Max 48 Working hours and Max 9 Hours a day. You can work for less ours if your management decides.
You can work 5 days or 5.5 days a week is purly at discretion of managemnt. However, you need to give advance notice of change to concerned employees.

Dear Rakesh,
It is very obvious for your position to worry about deciding the timings, as well as keeping up with the statutory compliance. I have worked with a factory wherein there was a 5 and half day working which suits quite well to the workers. It also helps in reducing the absenteeism in the employees. However, i am afraid i can't take the name of the company in whose factory i worked for. But i can assure that you won't face any problems until you go against the statutory laws.
5 and half day working pattern:
Monday to Friday - 8 and 1/2 hours
Saturday - 5 and 1/2 hours
Total weekly working hours - 48
I did not suggest 5 day working pattern because it leads to absenteeism on Monday's and Friday's. A very common pattern observed. Anyway, finally the top management will take the final call on this.

Or if you want it as 6 days working then you can work out this way:
All 6 days: 7 and 1/2 hours (including 1/2 hour lunch break)
Total working hours: 45
Warning: The effect on productivity also need to be considered when reducing the work hours.
However, this may keep the workers and employees happy as their work timings have reduced and they might be able to reach their homes early. But i am afraid the top management would never take such a huge risk. Discuss this out with the company HR's in and around the city in which your factory is located.
Hope this helps.

Dear Rakesh,
The empoyees' demand for work life balance is genuine and also in the interest of your Company as it will lead to better productivity. I agree the Factories Act gives the upper limit and at the same time your Management would not like to reduce working hrs. Little bit of thinking outside the box will give you the solution. Put on your creative hat. One of the solutions would be to start early and end early. How abt starting at 07 30 hrs and ending at 15 30 hrs and throw some fun inside the factory for de-stressing?
Best of luck

Dear Siddesh,
Thanks for your nice inputs ! It would have of great help had you mentioned the name of the company where such working hours pattern is followed. It would be a lot easier to convince my Management.

Dear I have gone through various comments. Please note while rescheduling the working hours kindly ensure the timing in one session (either prior or after lunch) should not exceed 5 hours. This is as per the provisions in factory act. Hence pl note while rescheduling thanks gopu
