Dear Bhaskar,

Ozone (O3) is a gas occurs naturally in the atmosphere. Its portion in atmospheric gaseous composition is too little, but plays a vital role in protecting living organisms under the sun. The concentrated ozone lies as a layer in the stratosphere many miles away from the earths surface which acts as a protecting shield.

There are many ionizing and non-ionizing radiation which are emitted by the sun and other planets, especially the UV rays is of particular concern for this matter. When the living organisms including plants and aquatic organisms when exposed to this UV rays gets affected. In human it causes skin cancer and cataract in eyes.

This Ozone layer filters out the harmful UV rays from entering in to the earths atmosphere thus it protects the living organisms.

The major culprit in causing ozone depletion is CFC chlorofluorocarbon a highly stable gaseous chemical that we call it as "Freon" which is used in the refrigerators and other purposes lives longer time in the atmosphere and reaches high altitudes when it is released. The CFC reaching the stratosphere involves in violent chain reaction with OZONE and denatures it. Thus ozone depletion, the so called "ozone hole" formed. This HOLE lets in the UV rays to the atmosphere. This UV rays will cause detrimental effects on living organisms as explained above.

Hope now you have gained some idea about the importance of OZONE.

SSM

Thank you Mr. SSM for sharing some basic idea about the Ozone (O3) with our members. Before 2 decades there was a news stating that the Ozone Layer got damaged due to over usage of Refrigerators and ACs. But due to that news now we got the CFC free Refrigerators and ACs in the market.
Shall we expect the History and origin of Ozone Day Celebration and the Procedure for celebrating the Ozone day from our members.
