Dear Simmi

Job Rotation is a movement between different jobs. This avoids employee becoming bored with job and help them in learning new skills. It has number of positive impacts as well as negative impacts on employees as well as organisation. Multiskilled employee may be good in one organisation but may not be at all suitable with precision/ speciality based organisation. I do not know what sort organisation is of yours with respect to size and its nature of business.

I also want to know from you that why your organisation is wanting to introduce this policy. I my knowledge there are many reasons of introducing job rotation in organisation. These may be to evolve potential for increased product quality , employee satisfaction and lower cumulative trauma disorder.

It is not easy to implement this change in one stroke ,it is suggested that program of job rotation should start slowly at first and if required can be refined further for complete implementation.

positives of the policy in general are

Reduced boredom

Reduced work stress

Increased innovation

Increased free time activity

Increased production

Reduced absenteeism

Reduced turnover

Negative impacts may be

Experienced workers not wanting to learn new types of work

Machine operators not wanting to "lend" their machines to others

Practical problems of physically getting from one job to the next

Unsuitable wage forms

Education and training of workers for new jobs

Difficulties in finding appropriate jobs to rotate to

Inappropriate use of job rotation by management

Please do reply to above then i will be in a position to suggest you on the policy and assessment of job rotation in an organisation.

Dear Anand,
Ours is a software Organisation with 40 odd people working. Right now we have around three product teams working on different projects. And people have approached me with various problems like leadership, project, team etc. So thought of introducing a Job Rotataion policy.

Simmi.

I implemented job rotation in a children's educational facility many years ago, thinking that it would bring about many of the positive changes that Anand documents.
To some extent there were positives, but there was also a strong negative "kickback" from staff who described a loss of job satisfaction and a sense of their specific skills being wasted in a new environment. The job rotation policy changed after a couple of years so that rather than being mandatory, staff were permitted to negotiate their own exchanges if all those affected were in agreement. Much happier and productivity increased again!
Simmi, I wonder if job rotation is being proposed in your organisation when in fact the organisation should be considering leadership development and skill and knowledge development in the various disciplines represented in your work force?
