Ammonia Cylinder Storage Safety Inquiry

The case is as follows: Our Store department has received 20 ammonia cylinders, each with a capacity of 50 kg, temporarily under the project job work. They raised a question about ammonia storage safety for these 20 ammonia cylinders in the store by demanding a sprinkler system provision. However, as per the Factory Act 1963, TAC, IS-2190, we have already provided a fire network line with a double hydrant protection system (01 No.) in the store yard area where these cylinders are kept.

My question is, is it essential to install a sprinkler system in the store yard area for only 20 NH3 cylinders? What are the ammonia safety rules, and what should be done in this type of situation?

Thanks,

The Factories Act, TAC, and IS 2190 do not specify specific fire protection systems. You will need to refer to the Gas Cylinder rules, read the MSDS, and compile both requirements to implement the necessary preventive system accordingly. Ammonia falls under the Major Accident Hazard rules, Schedule I, Part II, serial number 31 of the Maharashtra rules. You need to have an on-site emergency control plan under these rules. You are required to conduct a safety audit by a competent person and comply with the suggestions.

Since I have never used toxic gases, I may not be able to comment on the sprinkler requirements. Alternatively, you can find out who else is using Ammonia and identify the safety requirements.

All things considered, please update this forum once you receive an authentic suggestion.
