Am working in a MNC Company. Am responsibly for the improvement of canteen . i need to made a vision able change. So can any one help me out to improve small small things in canteen? And you could appreciable if you share your present canteen management system and innovative ideas you implemented or any idea you have means...need your quick reply

first all of what u need to do is make a questionnaire and circulate it within your employee and ask them to give their feedback as to what they feel about the quality / hygiene & ambiance part when they come to canteen to have their lunch & breakfast
This kind of survey is similar to what HR ppl do i.e customer satisfaction survey
once you get the feedback from employee u will automatically come to know what are the problem areas and where u need to stress upon to rectify the present situation in canteen

Dear Mamoon,

Following things you can do with minimal cost, which i have done and got superb improvement in cafeteria.

1. Put hygiene poster in acrylic frame.

2. Nominate cafeteria Name (call for cafeteria nomination from employee.

3. Display Cafe menu in color format

4. Bud vase on dining table in center with gardens local flowers even bugan villa you can put (no need of roses, lilies)

5. Notice board with some GK, Motivational stuff, birthday, internal communication

6. You can use magazines, periodicals and make small library (management must be getting books which later thrown in dust bin). You can assign one corner for same

7. Tie up with vending machine like nescafe or cold drink brand to install tea, coffee, juice vending machine. (speak to your purchase manager he must be having contacts and idea and can be done free of cost)

8. Keep cafeteria feedback form and suggestion box (Quality of food, Ambiance of cafe, Hygiene in cafe, Seating arrangement etc )

9. Keep the timings for cafeteria (it should be place for chit chat and gossips all the day)

These are the things which i have done in my org with no cost or very less cost.

Iíve seen a program on QWL program. Itís called healthy work place activity. They calculated every dish on calorie count in the canteen and put it on the sign. So, their employees realized what they are eating.

Here I mentioned some tips for you .....
1. Display Daily menu @ service area.
2. fix LCD TV for news updation @ lunch hrs.
3. put vitamin and health tips Notice board with some GK.
4. at waste disposal area you should display on the board about food waste Report - weight ( kg ) at least one week , so workers get know about daily food waste .they will try to control the food waste as per they can.
5. Keep complain register which is help for improve the quality of the food.

First and foremost it is very Important to know your budjet and what your department head is willing to change. Many decisions might look very tempting but can create other problems. Also how big is your company and is union involved?? First change few things that are more visible and do not cost much. Then gain the confidence of management and workers and change other things. If you become over enthusiastic, it can boom rang
later. I have experience with 3 big companies catering to 3000 to 12000 employees. Hence this advice. Lots can be done if the management is willing to improve and think that canteen is not cost only it is an investment in people and good will.

Dear Mamoon,
You should explain to top management that " Employees are most valuable asset of the organization". If you are successfully done the same , you can do every thing in favor of employee welfare

- Form committee, team should comprise all staff from Junior to Senior level
- Based on the strength of the staff the canteen committee can ahve 3-5-7 members max
- Committee to change once in 3 months
- Committee should have an agenda to execute
- Focus area are as follows
o Hygiene
o Quality of Food
o Menu Varieties
- Daily inspection of raw materials of food
- Daily inspection of making process
- Canteen survey by staff

Look out for health and hygene aspect on priority.Spread awareness about the healthy food habits.Promote Inspection standards for food safety and hygene.Call out for savings and avoid wastages of food through variuos motivative programes. Canteen is a place where employees will take their food,pproper lighting and ventillation is must.
Various companies look out for saving on wastage of food through varous process.Adapt one such process to arrest food wastages.
If your canteen is outsourced to vendors have the list of various checks on food quality, medical,health and hygene practices through audit.
